Poverty is strongly linked, not surprisingly, to unemployment. Despite the relatively robust economic growth, less than one-fifth of the labor force is in paid employment. Nearly 80 percent of the labor force is in vulnerable employment with the level at around 94 percent for rural women. The productivity of many of the “employed” is low and consequently, they earn low wages, making them working poor.
