Liberia Transitional Justice

ATJLF Project

African Transitional Justice Liberia project seeks to promote and address transitional justice in Liberia thereby remembering those that got affected during the 14 years of civil war by providing reparations. War shouldn’t be an option anymore for any country, rather dialogue and conflict resolution should be the way forward for addressing ills in society.

The Africa Transitional Justice Legacy Fund (ATJLF) is a 501(c)(3) organization with the ultimate aim of rebuilding communities and promoting survivor agency in transitional societies.

Political, ethnic, and religious antagonism continues to thrive in Liberia potentially because of limited redress of the past vices of the civil war. Since the election of President Weah, the issue of national reconciliation has received renewed attention and saliency in Liberia. Yet, others have said, he is only playing lip service to the country’s reconciliation efforts by his alignment with former warlords and his failure to adequately fund TJ institutions such as the INCHR, the LACC, and the Land Authority.

In 2018, the United Nations Country Team in Liberia conducted a Common Country Assessment (CCA3), and the Pro-poor Agenda for Development (PAPD)4, revealed that the conflict triggers which led to the protracted civil war in Liberia have continued to remain unaddressed. Some of the key conflict drivers highlighted in both the CCA (2018) and PAPD include the limited address of TJ issues; land and county boundary disputes; and concerns over ineffective delivery of legislative agenda.
